“The Things I Carry” by Amir Omer
September 26, 2025
I carry my family in my heart because I love them.
I carry my passport on the airplane so I can go on vacation.
I carry knowledge.
I carry memories in my heart because it reminds me who I am.
I carry water in my pocket when I need hydration.
I carry a book for comfort.
I carry food when I am hungry.
I carry my heart.
I carry my word because I am truthful.
I carry love when I am with my mom.
I carry love.
This poem was written by Amir Omer as a 5th grader at Graham Hill Elementary School, with WITS writer-in residence Putsata Reang. Performed at the Seattle Arts & Lectures Encore Series event with Jill Lepore at Town Hall Seattle on September 26, 2021.
