“All Hail to the Calendar” by Emma Lynn Goodwin

Finally, we can say Happy New Year from SAL! As a good reminder that years come and go, here’s a poem written by fourth grader Emma Lynn Goodwin, from Salish Coast Elementary School, written as part of our Writers in the Schools program.

All Hail to the Calendar

All hail to the calendar.
Yes, the one who
keeps the days,
the weeks,
and the years.
All hail to the calendar.
Yes, the one who
plans our events,
keeps the holidays safe,
and tells us all it’s a special day today.
All hail to the calendar.
Yes, the one who
lets markers drape across it,
is comfy with little words on it,
and
is going to be thrown away.
All hail to the calendar.
Yes, the one who acts as a calculator
counting down the days,
holds our time in a bag for us,
and
sits in the corner while we have fun.
All hail to the calendar.
