A Blog of Seattle Arts & Lectures

All at SAM: Exhibition Openings, WITS Broadsides Showcase, & More!

Tomorrow, on Thursday, October 17, the Seattle Art Museum will be opening its doors to the public to celebrate the opening of their new exhibit, Flesh & Blood. The exhibit features Italian masterpieces from the Capodimonte Museum, offering a rare opportunity to experience the fierce beauty of art from the 16th and 17th centuries. What’s more, this evening will be packed with festivities, including performances, music, and art-making—plus, an appearance from our Writers in the Schools (WITS) program!

Let’s dig into the night of fun:

5:45 & 6:15pm: In partnership with Refract, glass artist Gracia Nash and designer, curator, and stylist Matthew Lawrence lead My Favorite Things tours.

6:30pm: Danielle Sampson from Seattle Opera performs a pop-up repertoire of works by Baroque composers from Naples and female composers from the same era.

6 & 7pm: Palace Theatre & Art Bar takes the stage for a series of eclectic performances reflecting the darkness, drama, and human emotion of Flesh and Blood.

7pm: Dance artists Mikhail Calliste and Michele Dooley embody Flesh and Blood by creating living representations of works on view and performing solos in response to the exhibition.

All Night Long: Artist Barry Johnson leads a drawing activity from live models; participants are invited to share their work on social media.

WITS has accepted an invitation to join in on the fun with our 2018/19 Seattle Children’s Broadsides Showcase! This special exhibit of our touring broadsides, which features a collection of 20 hand-printed poems by students at Children’s Hospital, created by talented letterpress artists in a partnership with the School of Visual Concepts, will appear in SAM’s Community Gallery.

Stop by, say hello, and check out a copy of our 2018/19 WITS Anthology, To the Mountainside to Find the Sunrise!
