“Remember,” by Kalea Anderson-Kriegler

Remember

Remember to pack. Remember
to look out your telescope every day.
Remember to tell your loved ones
you’re leaving soon, until the final
day comes. Remember to invite them
to come to the rocket ship to say bye,
and they will remember you, too.
Then they will launch you into orbit
and remember everything you learned
twenty years ago. Then, only then,
remember how lucky you are. Then,
when you come back, maybe you
won’t have to wash the dishes anymore.

Kalea Anderson-Kriegler wrote this poem while a 4th Grader at View Ridge Elementary School, with WITS Writer Kathleen Flenniken. Performed at Seattle Arts & Lectures’ Women You Need to Know Series event with Soraya Chemaly at Benaroya Hall on January 31, 2019.
