Community Access

We believe that reading, writing, and creative thinking are indispensable to a curious, engaged, democratic society. Our goal is to make these experiences available to as many people as possible, regardless of economic circumstances—which is why we created our Community Access Tickets (CAT) program.

We know that not everyone is able to afford the full ticket price to our events, but that they are no less passionate about our speakers and the messages on our stages. If that sounds like you, please fill out a CAT program application by clicking the “Apply” button below.

If you have any feedback or would like to make suggestions as to how we can improve this program, we’d love to hear from you. Call the SAL Box Office at 206-621-2230 x10, or email us at boxoffice@lectures.org.

How It Works

What qualifies as "economic hardship"? How do I know I'm eligible for the CAT program?

CAT seeks to address the systemic inequalities of class in our culture–it allows folks who are priced out of our lowest seating levels ($10-$20) to have the chance to take part in SAL.

We don’t require proof of financial instability to apply; we recognize that proof can be a barrier to access. That being said, we ask that you think honestly about your level of access to resources.

To help you think deeply, here are some guiding statements about economic marginalization. If one or more of the following statements applies to you, that might indicate that you are a good fit for our CAT program:

I am unemployed or underemployed.

I frequently stress about meeting basic needs (like food, housing, and transportation), and I don’t always achieve those needs.

I have debt that prevents me from meeting basic needs.

I have unstable housing, or rent lower-end properties.

I qualify for government assistance, such as food stamps or healthcare.

I have no, or very limited, expendable income (examples of expendable items: movie tickets, books, lattes, dinner out).

I rarely buy new items or experiences because I am unable to afford them.

How do I apply for CAT tickets?

To submit a CAT application, simply fill out the required fields in the form here, and select all of the SAL events you would like to be considered for.

Approximately two weeks before each event, SAL staff will randomly draw from the pool of applicants, and the ticket recipients will be notified via email, or by text message if preferred. Ticket recipients will have 48 hours to confirm their attendance.

Tickets can either be delivered either by email or picked up at Will Call as early as 6:00pm the night of the event; if selected, our box office will reach out to coordinate details.

There is a limit of one entry per person. Each ticket recipient can enter for either one or two General-level tickets.

I don't feel I'm a good fit for CAT, but I'm interested in low-cost tickets at SAL. What do you offer?

Every event in our 2019/20 Season offers $20 tickets, unless that level is sold-out. (See individual events for more specific details.)

We offer $10 tickets to students of any age, or those 25 and under, to all of our events.

Our Hinge Series presents $10-15 events.

For teens, day-of tickets are also available for free through TeenTix (and companion tickets for adults are $5).

What are my chances of getting a ticket?

Depending on seating capacity, we are able to offer between 6 – 12 CAT tickets per event; your probability of getting CAT tickets depends on the number of applications we receive. The application selection is randomized by computer, and the order of entry has no effect on your chances of receiving tickets.

Is there a limit to the number of events I can apply to?

No; all events available for tickets through CAT are listed on the application form, and there is no limit to the number of events you can apply to. That being said, please only apply to events you know you would be available to attend.

Can I bring a friend to the event?

Yes! When you fill out the CAT application, you will have the option to select either one or two tickets if you’d like to bring a companion.

I don't see my question here, or I would like to provide feedback.

If you have any unanswered questions, or any feedback for how we can improve our programming, please reach out to the SAL Box Office at 206-621-2230 x 10, or email us at boxoffice@lectures.org. For general inquiries about SAL events, please see our FAQ page.
