When I was a kid, my favorite book was Harriet the Spy. I loved Harriet’s spy toolkit, which was essentially the writer’s toolkit. As a kid in rural Massachusetts, I was also obsessed with the observational possibilities of being a city kid. Also: egg creams. What were they? I needed to know. On my desk, you might find a paperweight made by my brother who is a glassblower, a tiny deer, an embroidered pamplemousse La Croix, an empty actual La Croix, and a picture of my son, Archer. When I’m not at SAL, Archer and I can be found adventuring to Carkeek Park. My favorite book right now is Circe by Madeleine Miller. I’m a sucker for Greek myth and this reimagining felt both timeless and entirely of the moment.
