WITS Paid Publishing Internship

Writers in the Schools (WITS) is a literary arts education program of Seattle Arts & Lectures (SAL) that places professional local writers in 39 public schools across six school districts, as well as Seattle Children’s Hospital during the school year. WITS aims to elevate the self-expression of students as they discover and develop their authentic writing and performance voices. Through WITS, students become authors of their own lives.

Reports to: WITS Program Manager

WITS has four primary goals:

  • Inspire students to engage in the writing process, build writing skills and increase self-confidence
  • Build a race and equity lens to the teaching of creative writing with the goal of cultivating a sense of belonging for all, while centering students most impacted by structural racism
  • Build a positive learning community that amplifies and celebrates student voices
  • Support teachers and students by providing opportunities for meaningful connection with local writers

WITS is seeking two publishing interns for summer support from mid-June to early-August 2025 (ideally June 17-August 5 but exact dates are flexible depending on intern availability). The publishing intern will work on a wide variety of tasks and projects including:

  • Assisting with editorial efforts for the publication of the yearly WITS anthology (compiling and ordering student work, copy editing drafts, co-authoring an introduction, determine chapter titles, proofreading, etc.)
  • Designing WITS promotional materials to be used throughout the 25-26 school year.
  • Contributing to SAL community-wide events

Requirements:

  • A commitment from June – Aug. 2025, 15 hours per week, on a regular schedule (likely Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7.5 hours per day). Intern credit is available with collaboration with university faculty.
  • Collaborate with staff and other volunteers.
  • Communicate with staff openly. Your ideas, comments and feedback are welcome!
  • Note: this internship is designed to take place primarily in person at the SAL office on Capitol Hill.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A demonstrated interest in literary arts and education; previous volunteer experience a plus.
  • Must possess a positive attitude and be flexible, friendly & courteous with guests and among peers.
  • Must be a team player but able to work independently on projects.
  • Good communication skills.

Compensation:

  • Pay is $25/hr. with a projected 15 hours/week for 7 weeks (up to 105 hours over the course of the summer). Credit hours are available for students
