SAL is excited to spotlight Seattle Escribe, co-presenter for our event with Cristina Rivera Garza and Javier Zamora!
Seattle Escribe is a nonprofit that supports Spanish-speaking writers in the U.S.—especially in the Northwest—through Spanish-language workshops, classes, readings, and creative development opportunities that strengthen cultural identity and expand access to the literary arts.
Seattle Escribe es una organización sin fines de lucro que apoya a escritores hispanohablantes en Estados Unidos —especialmente en la región del Noroeste— mediante talleres, clases, lecturas y oportunidades de desarrollo creativo en español que fortalecen la identidad cultural y amplían el acceso a las artes literarias.
We interviewed María de Lourdes Victoria, moderator for the event and founder of Seattle Escribe ahead of the event. Read on to learn more about what María enjoys about their works and what she hopes to explore on the stage.
About Maria
María de Lourdes Victoria is an award-winning bilingual author born in Mexico and based in Seattle. Her work has been published internationally in both English and Spanish. She is the author of five novels and several children’s books, and the founder of Seattle Escribe, the largest community of Spanish-language writers in the Pacific Northwest.
How did you first get involved with Seattle Arts & Lectures?
I first learned about SAL through a friend who showed me the catalogue and invited me to a lecture many years ago.
What are you most looking forward to in your conversation with Garza/Zamora?
I am delighted that Seattle Arts & Lectures has made space for Latino authors in its catalogues. There is a thriving and expanding community of writers who write in Spanish while living in the United States. As part of that community, I am eager to hear the authors reflect on the experience of writing in Spanish away from their countries of origin, and on how bilingualism and biculturalism have shaped their paths as writers in the U.S.
Is there a theme, idea, or tension you’re especially interested in exploring with the authors?
In Liliana’s Invincible Summer, Cristina invites us to reflect on the normalization of intimate partner violence, the search for justice amid impunity, and the power of memory to restore a victim’s voice. Zamora’s work foregrounds a deep longing for family, the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring trauma and physical dangers of migration. I would welcome a conversation with the authors about how these themes remain urgently relevant today.
What’s something you admire about Rivera Garza and Zamora’s work?
Both authors are highly accomplished writers, with a command of prose that keeps readers deeply immersed—no small feat, particularly in memoir. Cristina’s work combines archival documents, personal narrative, and poetry to reconstruct histories and memories, drawing from Liliana’s “emotional archives” to challenge the silence and impunity surrounding femicide in Mexico. I admire the way she writes about bodies marked by violence, illness, and state control with prose that is both dense and poetic. I admire Javier’s ability to reconstruct his traumatic childhood with precision and tenderness. The reader experiences the long, perilous journey alongside him, feeling the emotional weight of separation from his parents during a civil war. His work offers a powerful and honest view of the adult world’s cruelty and compassion from a child’s perspective.

Too many to count! But usually Pedro Páramo (Rulfo) El oficio de las tinieblas (Castellanos) or Amor en los tiempos de cólera (Garcia Marquez)

What kind of reader were you growing up?
I was an avid reader, but growing up in Mexico we had limited access to libraries, and my family could not afford to buy books for pleasure. As a result, books became my most treasured Christmas and birthday gifts.
What’s a question you’re hoping the audience will ask during this event?
Based on their experiences as immigrants in the United States, how do the authors feel about the way the current government is handling immigration?
What excites you most about live, onstage conversations?
The opportunity to engage in a one-on-one conversation with people who have so much to teach us.
What are you reading right now? Or read most recently?
I am reading many articles and books as part of my research for the fifth historical novel I just completed — a love story set in the Mexican coffee plantations in the 1900’s.

Conocí Seattle Arts & Lectures a través de una amiga que me mostró el catálogo y me invitó a una conferencia hace muchos años
¿Qué es lo que más esperas de tu conversación con Rivera Garza y Zamora?
Me alegra profundamente que Seattle Arts & Lectures haya abierto espacio en sus catálogos para autores latinos. Existe una comunidad dinámica y en constante crecimiento de escritores que escriben en español mientras residen en Estados Unidos. Como parte de esa comunidad, me interesa escuchar a los autores reflexionar sobre la experiencia de escribir en español lejos de sus países de origen y sobre cómo el bilingüismo y la biculturalidad han moldeado sus trayectorias como escritores en este país.
¿Hay algún tema, idea o tensión que te interese especialmente explorar con los autores?
En El invencible verano de Liliana, Cristina nos invita a reflexionar sobre la normalización de la violencia de pareja, la búsqueda de justicia en contextos de impunidad y el poder de la memoria para restituir la voz de la víctima. La obra de Zamora pone en primer plano el profundo anhelo de familia, la resiliencia del espíritu humano y el trauma persistente y los peligros físicos de la migración. Me gustaría abrir un diálogo con los autores sobre la vigencia y urgencia de estos temas en la actualidad.
¿Qué admiras del trabajo de Rivera Garza y Zamora?
Ambos son escritores sumamente talentosos, con un dominio de la prosa que mantiene al lector profundamente inmerso en sus textos, lo cual no es tarea menor, especialmente en el género de la memoria. Cristina combina documentos de archivo, narrativa personal y poesía para reconstruir historias y memorias, recurriendo a los “archivos emocionales” de Liliana para desafiar el silencio y la impunidad que rodean el feminicidio en México. Admiro su capacidad para escribir sobre cuerpos marcados por la violencia, la enfermedad y el control del Estado con una prosa densa y a la vez poética. De Javier admiro su habilidad para reconstruir su infancia traumática con precisión y ternura. El lector recorre junto a él el largo y peligroso viaje, sintiendo el peso emocional de la separación de sus padres en el contexto de una guerra civil. Su obra ofrece una mirada honesta y poderosa sobre la crueldad y la compasión del mundo adulto desde la perspectiva de un niño.
¿Cuál es un libro al que regresas una y otra vez?
¡Demasiados para contarlos! Pero con frecuencia vuelvo a Pedro Páramo (Juan Rulfo), El oficio de las tinieblas (Rosario Castellanos) y El amor en los tiempos del cólera (Gabriel García Márquez).

¿Qué tipo de lector eras durante tu infancia?
Era una lectora apasionada, pero al crecer en México el acceso a bibliotecas era limitado y mi familia no podía comprar libros por placer. Por ello, los libros se convirtieron en mis regalos más preciados en Navidad y en mis cumpleaños.
¿Qué pregunta te gustaría que el público hiciera durante este evento?
A partir de sus experiencias como inmigrantes en Estados Unidos, ¿cómo perciben los autores la manera en que el gobierno actual está gestionando el tema migratorio?
¿Qué es lo que más te entusiasma de las conversaciones en vivo, sobre el escenario?
La oportunidad de entablar un diálogo cercano y directo con personas que tienen tanto que enseñarnos.
¿Qué estás leyendo actualmente o qué leíste más recientemente?
Estoy leyendo diversos artículos y libros como parte de la investigación para mi quinta novela histórica, que acabo de terminar, es una historia de amor ambientada en las plantaciones de café mexicanas a principios del siglo XX.
