2023 Kids Summer Book Bingo: Reader Comments

One of the greatest joys of summers at SAL is when the Summer Book Bingo boards start rolling in. Reading the comments from participants about what they most learned, loved, and how they spent their summer reading time is always inspiring—especially when the comments are coming from young people!

 

Below, you can read about some of the experiences of youth, ages 17 and under, who participated in 2023 Kids Summer Book Bingo. In their own words, they tell us about their favorite books, their favorite places to read, and what the best parts of playing along were. 


What was your favorite book and why?

My favorite book was Starfish because I loved how she expressed her feeling about being “fat”. –Maya

My favorite book to read was The Midwife’s Apprentice because it was the final book ‘til blackout. –Ivy

My favorite book was Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. This was my favorite book because of how long it was. –Ellis

My favorite book was The Catcher in the Rye. Holden is one of the best characters EVER, and there were some very funny pages. –Masha

I like Dragon’s Merry Christmas because it was thoughtful. –Huey

My favorite book was It’s the End of the World and I’m in My Bathing Suit by Justin A. Reynolds. I liked it because it was really funny.  – Leo

Little Blue Truck is my favorite truck. I love sheep and big trucks. –Nathaniel

I Am Leonardo Da Vinci because it had big words and my Dad was so proud I read it. –Duncan

WONDER. It was funny and sweet, and I really liked the characters. –Sami

Lego City Meet the Singer because it had music. –Micha

My favorite book was The Curious Garden because it was about a garden that took over something old and made it beautiful. -Gabriel

My favorite book was Dog Man because it was funny! -Mira

 

What was your favorite place to read?

My favorite place to read is the rumpus room! –Marie

My favorite place to read this summer was outside at the park or with friends. -Elena

My favorite place to read was in my room with the AC on because it was too hot anywhere else! –Ripleigh

My favorite place to read was in my bed in the covers. –Benjamin

I liked to read in my bed when I woke up. –Beatrice

My favorite place to read this summer was on the beach at Whidbey. –Serena

My favorite spot to read was outside. –Oni

My favorite place to read is in my bedroom because it’s quiet and my cat can snuggle me. –Brett

In my fuzzy chair. –Maya

 

What was the best part about playing Summer Book Bingo?

I got to learn a lot! –Sasha

Anticipating finishing! –Jinwoo

The best part of Book Bingo was finding the books. –Beatrice

The best part was reading books I wouldn’t have thought to pick up if they hadn’t been fit a bingo prompt. -Kathleen

My favorite part of playing Book Bingo is discovering new books. –Kyla
