Summer Book Bingo: Six Summer Reads from Savitha Reddy Pathi

Summer Book Bingo is designed to provide free summer reading fun for both adults and kids. Last summer, participants read a total of 8717 books, and we received a whopping 248 blackout cards and 227 bingo cards—let’s do it again! There’s still time to swing by one of SAL’s partner bookstores this year to grab an Adult or Kid Bingo Card or download it here and wrap up the summer of ’17 reading great books.

In this post, Savitha Reddy Pathi, the Development Director at Climate Solutions and Board member of the Wing Luke Museum and Mize Family Foundation, let us peek into her backpack as she journeyed across the world on a recent sabbatical. Read on to find out Savitha’s picks for the summer (plus her pro-tip for how to travel with Ron Chernow’s massive 817-page Hamilton biography) . . .

Hamilton, Ron Chernow

I went to see Hamilton in Chicago in late May with one of my bookclubs, so I took my 800-page copy around the world with me on my sabbatical from February to May, and had to split the book in half to make it lay flat in my backpack!

The Guineveres, Sarah Domet

The Guineveres was the first book I read on my sabbatical. It was recommended by a good friend who went to college with the author. It is a beautifully written and riveting story, and the best book I’ve read so far in 2017.

The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood

I just got The Handmaid’s Tale over the July 4th weekend; my other bookclub met on Tuesday to discuss it. I’m slowly watching the Hulu series, but need to space it out because it is even scarier than the book, especially given our current political climate. I’m really glad I read the book first before watching the show!

I bought Today Will Be Different at SeaTac Airport on a trip to L.A. and finished it on my flight home. I thoroughly enjoyed it and could not stop laughing and crying with the main character’s very bad day.
