WITS Apprenticeship

Supporting literary teaching artists in developing their arts education pedagogy.

Becoming a teaching artist is not as simple as walking into a classroom—it requires a lot of hard work, skill building, and hands-on practice.

Since 2021, our biennial, year-long WITS Apprenticeship pairs experienced WITS Writers with apprentice mentees to support their acclimation into the classroom. Throughout the program, WITS Apprentices develop pedagogical skills, strengthen curriculum development, and refine their teaching voices.

Apprentices can expect to respond to student work, design and lead multiple lessons, research and select mentor texts, support the preparation of a culminating celebration, and more. They spend approximately two hours per week with their mentor WITS Writer and have opportunities to observe other WITS Writers, as well as receive structural and administrative support from staff.

WITS Apprentices are fully welcomed members of the WITS Writers Collective, receiving the same benefits and inclusion in the larger literary community. To date, all WITS Apprentices have gone on to become WITS Writers.

It was so wonderfully informative and helpful to be able to watch how my mentor worked with students, relayed lessons and make adjustments with creative problem solving along the way. The after-class debriefs have also been integral to this!WITS Apprentice
The really cool part of this program was being able to pass on knowledge from lived classroom experience to my mentee; it is one thing to understand how a job is done conceptually, and another thing completely to experience the dynamic work environment of WITS Writers in real-time.Mentor WITS Writer
