Since launching our first season of literary events in 1988, we have brought celebrated writers, thinkers, and cultural voices to Seattle for conversations that spark curiosity, connection, and imagination.

Through author talks, conversations, and free community events, we create intentionally curated spaces where readers, writers, students, teachers, and lifelong learners come together around powerful ideas and stories. Both in-person and online, these gatherings invite audiences to feel challenged, inspired, and more deeply connected—to literature, to one another, and to the world around them.

Our events also help sustain a vibrant literary ecosystem. By partnering with independent bookstores, libraries, educators, and community organizations—and by connecting young people with working writers in programs like Writers in the Schools and the Youth Poet Laureate program—we support both emerging and established voices. The result is a thriving community energized by books, storytelling, and the transformative power of the written word.

Our Impact

Our literary events create ripple effects across Seattle’s community and beyond. Here’s a snapshot of our impact from our 2024/25 Season, when we hosted 27 events for an audience of nearly 33,000:

SAL raised $352,778 for independent bookstores.
25% of SAL’s tickets were provided at reduced or no cost.
We connected our audiences to the work of over 40 community partners.
24 youth writers opened our Public Programs events with their original poems, comics, and stories, and got the chance to connect with visiting SAL authors.
