Faces of SAL: Danielle Palmer-Friedman

Many people work for SAL behind-the-scenes and it take a team to make it all happen. Danielle Palmer-Friedman has worked with SAL for the past year in a variety of ways—as a Words Matter volunteer, running front of house at events, and being a social media extraordinaire, to name just a few. Read on to learn more about some great reads from Danielle’s bookshelf!

Tell us a bit about what you do for SAL….

In the office, I assist the Public Programs team. Sometimes, that means working on behind-the-scenes Box Office stuff or writing content for the SAL/on blog. I work with SAL’s social media channels to share SAL news and exciting developments in the Seattle literary community. You can also find me at SAL events, helping you locate your tickets at the Box Office or collecting Q&A cards in the aisles of the hall.

What are you reading right now?

I’m currently reading My Private Property by Mary Ruefle and Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey. I’m at the point with both that I don’t actually want to finish them. I want to stretch and savor them just a little longer. Of course, I’m going to find space for both on my #BookBingoNW2019 board. Next up, I’m deciding between Native Speaker by Chang-Rae Lee and Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of Your Fist by Sunil Yapa.

What do you like to do outside of work/being at SAL?

I really enjoy local theater. Storytelling will always be my first love, and there’s something so special about seeing a story play out live on stage. I also find myself spending time with the other loves in life: friends, food, and thrift stores.

What upcoming SAL event are you most looking forward to?

Jeez, the toughest question yet! I’m super excited for everyone in the WYNK series: Lindy West, Carmen Maria Machado, and Maira Kalman. I’m also looking forward to Carol Anderson, Min Jin Lee, Mary Ruefle, Hanif Abdurraqib, Elizabeth Kolbert, Natalie Diaz … It’s going to be a good year!
