Book Bingo: Recommended by a Friend

Summer Book Bingo is a partnership with The Seattle Public Library and Seattle Arts & Lectures to provide free summer reading fun for adults. Swing by your local Seattle library branch or any one of SAL’s partner bookstores to grab a Bingo Card, then spend your summer reading great books—you can win fabulous prizes!

In this guest post, Vivian Phillips—the chair of the Seattle Arts Commission, director of marketing and communications for the Seattle Theatre Group, and SAL’s moderator for last season’s event with Ta-Nehisi Coates—shares her “Recommended by a Friend” square:

“I want to submit Tell the Truth and Shame the Devil: The Life, Legacy and Love of My Son Michael Brown by Lezley McSpadden. The forwards by Myrlie Evers and Common knocked me out. I need this story.”

Lezley McSpadden, mother of Michael Brown and the author of Tell the Truth and Shame the Devil, will be coming to Seattle University in the fall, and Vivian Phillips will be moderating a conversation with her based on this book and the incidents surrounding the death of her son.
