Introductions: Drew Barrymore

On the very rainy Saturday, November 7th, SAL Executive Director Ruth Dickey introduced the charismatic Drew Barrymore, who brightened the evening with her stories and words at the Center for Spiritual Living.  Barrymore was joined on stage by director and actor Lynn Shelton, who moderated their conversation.

If you are like me, you fell in love with Drew Barrymore more than 30 years ago when she charmed us in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. And if you are like me, you have continued to be charmed and to love her acting throughout her career, from The Wedding Singer, to Charlie’s Angels, to 50 First Dates, to Fever Pitch, to Music and Lyrics, to He’s Just Not That Into You.

But, Drew Barrymore is so much more than just an actor – in 1995 she launched her production company, Flower Films, and has received wide acclaim for her work as a director and producer. In addition to movies that have generated over 900 million dollars in ticket sales, she has garnered critical acclaim for films such as Donnie Darko and Grey Gardens. She is also a savvy entrepreneur, and has been a winemaker, launched a beauty line, and served as an Ambassador Against Hunger for the UN World Food Program.

She is also an author, and tonight we are here to celebrate the publication of her third book, Wildflower. The Kirkus Review says, “The voice of the woman who captured hearts as a child in E.T. is instantly recognizable in this sweet work,” and goes on to say, “It’s writing to and about her daughters and motherhood where Barrymore shines. She allows herself to be vulnerable and overcome with wonder, just like the girl America fell in love with decades ago.” Indeed, Wildflower feels like a really long meal with an old friend, full of great stories, insights and joy. Opening your heart is a courageous act, and Wildflower shines with Drew’s vivacious loves – for her work, for her friends, for her husband and daughters, and for life. We are so lucky through this book to be invited into her blossoming, and to have her here with us tonight – please join me in welcoming the unbelievably talented and unbelievably radiant, Drew Barrymore.
